Ian Mulvey
Based in the Scottish Highlands, I have nearly four decades of outdoor experience, with an extensive background in endurance events and multi-day personal challenges in the mountains.
My qualifications include a Bsc (Hons) Degree in Sport & Exercise Science and certification in ultrarunning coaching, demonstrating an understanding of exercise science and its application to endurance sports.
For the past 15 years I have focused on our business, High terrain Events. I set this up with my partner Emily back in 2009, starting off with just one event, an off road duathlon. After many years of competing in a wide variety of endurance sports, it just seemed natural to create races that I really enjyed myself & felt most passionate about. I was also doing some consulting work with a friend who was setting up a sports nutrition brand at the time, & thought why not design our own events as a means to help promote the brand. What started off with an idea eventually became a full time business & over the years we have organised many events including trail and ultra running, triathlon, duathlon, cycle sportives & open water swimmng. It has been really fulfilling to see so many people taking on their own personal challenges & achieve their goals, whether from beginner to elite.
Prior to moving to the Highlands, I was based in the Lake District for 15 years, becoming a qualified Mountain Leader (Summer) and a previous member of Lake District mountain rescue.
My sporting background started out in triathlon (pre wetsut days!), competing in distances ranging from sprint to the prestigous Embrun Ironman in the French Alps. then graduating more into the off-road scene of fell racing, mountain marathons, MTB & cyclo cross.
I have competed in many trail & ultra running races in mountainous environments at various distances, with racing experience in several countries including France, Italy, Austria, Switzerland & Spain. I also enjoyed adventure races ranging from one day events to multi-day expedition style & stage races,
I am most inspired by mountainous environments, whether it's the Scottish Highlands or the high alps. Some of my most enjoyable mountain adventures include multi-day hiking throughout the alps, whether creating our own trips or the classic alpine treks such as the Tour of Monte Rosa or the Corsica GR20, glacier trekking, via ferrata and hut to hut nordic ski tours across the Hardangervidda Plateau & Jotunheimen National Park in Norway.
Alpine regions visited include Chamonix valley, Gran Paradiso, Pyrenees, Picos de Europa, Ecrins, Chartreuse, Vercors, Jura, Corsica, Mercantour, Engadine, Bernese Oberland & Dolomites.
Based in the Scottish Highlands provides great opportunities to enjoy many varied activities throughout the year. Whether it's a ski tour across the Cairngorms plateau or a sea kayak trip on the North West Coast, I really enjoy immersing myself in the natural environment.
I have also been a full-time firefighter so can understand scheduling training with the aspects of a demanding occupation.
I like to have an open mind engaged in continual learning to keep expanding my knowledge and experience. I really enjoy the planning aspect, whether it's designing training programs or researching a specific tour & how best to prepare. Throughout my sporting endeavors I have probably made all the classic mistakes, finding out what works well & what doesn't. I have also had the privelege to train & race with many inspiring people. The focus now is to utilize this wealth of experience on helping others achieve their goals in the outdoors.
